A writer's costume can consist of many things - clothes that you wear, an attitude you put on, a swagger or gait that you adopt, a tone of voice or facial expresion. What outward appearances define a persona as a "writer"?
For me, it is primarily the ink stain I usually develop on the pinky of my right hand. I write holding the pen between my middle and ring finger (rather than the index and middle finger as you are taught to do in grade school). Also, when I write I drag my hand across the page as I go. So, if I write for any extended period of time (or with a particularly inky pen) I develop the ink stain on my pinky.
But today, I have adopted what I would like to call writerly attire as I see it. Its jeans, a tight black t-shirt and a newsie hat that looks like a man's dress hat. For whatever reason the hat is what really makes it for me. I've always loved hats!
